The Airborne Museum is located in Oosterbeek, a town near Arnhem. The museum is dedicated to the Allied Operation Market Garden, which took place during World War II in September 1944. The operation was intended to capture the bridges over the Rhine near Arnhem in order to speed up the advance of the Allies, but the operation ultimately failed . The museum is located in the former headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division and displays a large number of original objects, uniforms, photographs and documents depicting the events of the Battle of Arnhem. There are several exhibition rooms that take the visitor through the different phases of the battle, from the airborne landings to the evacuation of the surviving soldiers. One of the highlights of the museum is the Airborne Experience, an interactive presentation that the visitor experiences what it was like to participate in the operation as a soldier. Through projections, sound effects and vibrating floors, a realistic and impressive simulation of the battle is shown. |
