Bookstore Dominicanen is one of the most special bookstores in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of the historic city center of Maastricht. The bookshop is located in a former monastery church of the Dominican order from the 13th century and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. The church was closed by the French in 1804 and has since had various functions including that of storage space and bicycle shed. In 2006 the church was converted into a bookshop, preserving the interior of the church as much as possible. For example, the stained glass windows and the frescoes on the walls are still visible, which gives the bookstore a unique and atmospheric appearance. Bookstore Dominicanen has an extensive collection of books, including Dutch and international literature, history books , art books and books about Maastricht and Limburg. There is also a department with children's books and a wide selection of English books. In addition to the wide range of books, the bookstore also offers a stage for various cultural events such as book presentations, lectures and concerts. In the bookshop there is also a café where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a piece of cake, surrounded by books and the beautiful architecture of the church. Bookstore Dominicanen has won several awards, including the award for Best Bookstore in the Netherlands in 2008 and the Best Bookstore of the World Award in 2019. It is not only a place to buy books, but also to enjoy the atmosphere and history of the church. |
