Brouwersdam Ouddorp - Recreation area

The Brouwersdam is an impressive structure that separates the North Sea from the Grevelingenmeer in the province of Zeeland. It is the largest dam in the Netherlands and connects the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. The Brouwersdam is not only an important flood defence, but also a popular tourist destination and water sports location.

History

Construction of the Brouwersdam started in 1963 and lasted four years. The purpose of the dam was to separate the water of the North Sea from the Grevelingenmeer, which used to be in open connection with the sea. As a result, the Grevelingenmeer became a freshwater lake and could be used for recreation and agriculture.

The Brouwersdam has a total length of over 6 kilometers and is more than 20 meters high in some places. The structure is made up of concrete elements that are stacked on top of each other and anchored in the seabed. It also contains sluices and sluices to regulate the water balance.

In addition to its important function as a flood defense and fresh-salt separation, the Brouwersdam has developed into a popular tourist destination and water sports location. In the summer months, the dam attracts thousands of visitors who enjoy the sun, the beach and the sea. The beach on the North Sea side is popular among kitesurfers and windsurfers because of the strong wind and high waves. It is quieter on the Grevelingenmeer side and there you can go sailing, kayaking, supping and diving.
