What is dragon boat racing?
The Helmond dragon boat races of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 were a resounding success. Due to corona, no races were held in 2020 and 2021. But in 2022, the canal in the heart of Helmond once again took center stage in this sporting challenge on the water. Teams, strikingly dressed according to ancient Chinese traditions, compete against each other in authentic dragon boats. The rhythm of the race is set by drum beats, and fans enthusiastically cheer for their team: it's an exciting and colorful spectacle! On Saturday, company teams from Helmond and the surrounding region will participate. On Sunday it is the turn of associations and clubs. The race course is 250 meters long and is located between Havenplein and Keyserinnedael. Every five minutes, two teams start a race that lasts approximately one and a half minutes from start to finish.
About the dragon boat teams
A dragon boat team consists of 16 paddlers and a drummer. The drummer is at the front of the boat and sets the rhythm with strong beats on the drum. This rhythm is adopted by the first 2 paddlers, and the rest of the paddlers follow their lead. The organization provides an experienced helmsman or woman on each boat, who stands at the back and guides the team and gives instructions. The speed is determined by the timing and force with which the paddles are inserted into the water. This makes dragon boat racing a true team sport: cooperation is crucial!
