Since 2013, Heerlen has chosen to support the urban lifestyle of the residents of Parkstad by means of murals on mostly vacant buildings. This ambitious project brought together national and international artists and transformed the city. People came from afar to admire the impressive works of art on a large scale. The popularity of these murals, also known as murals, led to more and more buildings being made available for this form of art. Over the years, Heerlen has grown into the street art capital of the Netherlands.
International artists
One of the remarkable murals in Heerlen is 'The Stranger', made by the Brazilian artist twins Os Gemeos. This mural, located on the Schelmenhofje, has since become an iconic work of art in Heerlen and the surrounding area. Another prominent mural called 'De Koolpiet' can be found in the center of the city. This mural won the Dutch Streetart Award in 2016 and refers to Heerlen's mining past. Artists from various countries such as Brazil, Chile, Mexico, the United States, China, South Africa, England, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine and the Netherlands have left their mark.< /p>
