Lighthouse Noorderhoofd is an iconic lighthouse located on the coast of Zeeland in the Netherlands. The lighthouse is located on the westernmost point of the former island of Walcheren.
The current lighthouse was built in 1875 and has a height of 19.5 metres. The light from the tower has a range of approximately 20 nautical miles, meaning that in ideal conditions the light is visible 20 nautical miles away. The tower is made of cast iron plates and is painted in the characteristic colors white with red bands.
The Noorderhoofd lighthouse has played an important role in the maritime history of the Netherlands. It was an important orientation point for ships entering the Western Scheldt and helped prevent shipwrecks on the dangerous sandbanks off the coast. During the Second World War, the lighthouse was used as a lookout post by the German occupiers.
