La Trapa is a nature reserve and former monastery on the island of Mallorca, Spain. It is located in the southwestern part of the island, in the municipality of Andratx. The area is about 1800 hectares in size and is named after the monastery that was built here in the 16th century by monks of the Trappist order. The monastery was used as a refuge for pilgrims on their way to the nearby sanctuary of Sant Elm. The area is very popular with hikers and nature lovers due to its breathtaking landscapes and rich flora and fauna. There are several hiking trails in the area, including the "Cami de la Trapa" and the "Cami des Correu". In 1987 the area was declared a protected natural area by the government of the Balearic Islands and it was leave the monastery. The building has since been restored and is now open to visitors as a museum and cultural center. |
