Domunder is a unique attraction in the historic city center of Utrecht, located below Domplein. It is an underground museum that brings the rich history of Utrecht and Domplein to life. The attraction has been open since 2014, but has attracted many visitors since then due to its unique and interactive way of telling history. The museum starts with a film that takes the visitor through the history of the Dom Square, from the Roman time up to the Middle Ages. The visitor then enters an underground system of corridors in which various historical moments are highlighted. For example, attention is paid to the Vikings who plundered the city, the construction of the Dom Tower and the destruction of the city during World War II. What makes Domunder so special is that it offers visitors the offers the opportunity to literally walk through history. The corridors and rooms are built around the remains of old buildings and walls that can still be seen. Various interactive elements are also used to give visitors a better understanding of the history. For example, visitors can make a medieval mural themselves or view a digital reconstruction of the old Roman city wall. In addition to the underground museum, Domunder also offers various guided tours above ground. For example, visitors can learn more about the history of Domplein and the city of Utrecht under the guidance of a guide. These tours are definitely worth it, because the guides often have interesting stories and anecdotes to tell that cannot be found in the museum. |
