In the middle of the historic center of The Hague, housed in the former winter palace of Queen Mother Emma, there is a unique museum that defies the boundaries of reality. Escher in Het Paleis is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher (1898-1972). The museum houses the world's largest collection of Escher's work and offers visitors an immersive journey through the astonishing world of optical illusions and impossible worlds. Maurits Cornelis Escher, whose fascination with mathematics , geometry and perspective led him to create boundless works of art, is known worldwide for his fascinating engravings and lithographs. His work challenges the human brain with its ingenious compositions and plays with the laws of physics and the limits of our imagination. Escher in Het Paleis is divided into three floors, each with its own theme. The ground floor focuses on his early works, in which Escher explores his interest in landscapes and architecture. Here, visitors will discover his Italian period and the superb rendering of Mediterranean landscapes that helped shape his artistic style. The first floor is dedicated to his Metamorphoses, a series of works in which Escher plays with the idea of transformation. Here you can see how Escher combines his artistic and mathematical skills to create amazing images that transition seamlessly from one object to the next. One of the highlights of this floor is the 7.5 meter long woodcut 'Metamorphosis III', an impressive example of Escher's unparalleled talent. The second floor is in the sign of Escher's impossible worlds and optical illusions. This part of the exhibition features some of his most iconic works, such as 'Relativity', 'Belvedere' and 'Belvedere'. and 'Waterfall'. In these works, Escher manipulates the laws of perspective and space, taking the viewer on a visual journey in which nothing is what it seems. |
