On the boulevard of Scheveningen, a stone's throw from the North Sea, there is a special museum that focuses entirely on the art of sculpture: Museum Beelden aan Zee. Founded in 1994 by Dutch collector couple Theo and Lida Scholten, this unique museum offers visitors the chance to admire an impressive and diverse collection of sculptures in a spectacular architectural setting.
The museum building itself is a work of art in itself , designed by the Dutch architect Wim Quist. It is partly dug into the dunes, blending beautifully into the surrounding coastal landscape. The use of large windows and open courtyards allows natural light to flood into the exhibition spaces and bring the images to life. The sculptural forms of the building and the proximity to the sea create a special atmosphere that enhances the experience of viewing the images.
The collection of Museum Beelden aan Zee consists of more than 1000 sculptures ranging from traditional bronze and marble statues to contemporary installations and multimedia works. The museum focuses mainly on modern and contemporary sculpture and features works by renowned artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Fernando Botero, Karel Appel and Armando. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, showcasing both established and emerging artists.
One of the most striking features of the museum is the adjacent sculpture park, called SprookjesBeelden aan Zee. Opened in 2004, this open-air section of the museum is free to enter and displays a collection of 23 bronzes by American sculptor Tom Otterness. The playful and sometimes humorous images are inspired by well-known fairy tales and legends, and are a favorite with children and adults alike. The sculpture park is located on the boulevard, with a beautiful view of the sea, and is an ideal place for a relaxing walk.
