Castle Twickel is a castle located near the village of Delden. The castle dates back to the 16th century and has had a rich history over the centuries. It is still inhabited today and is managed by the Twickel Foundation. The castle is surrounded by a vast estate of more than 4,000 hectares, which extends over the municipalities of Hof van Twente and Hengelo. The estate consists of extensive forests, meadows, fields and streams, and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The castle itself is an impressive building with a rich history. It was built in the late 16th century by order of the wealthy textile merchant Bernard van Raesfelt. The castle was built in the Dutch Renaissance style and has an impressive facade with beautiful turrets and ornaments. Over the centuries, the castle has been renovated and expanded several times, adding more and more style influences . For example, French baroque elements were added in the 18th century. The interior of the castle is also very impressive and contains many historical furniture, paintings and other art objects. Today Castle Twickel is still inhabited by the Van Heeckeren van Wassenaer family, who have owned it for more than 400 years of the estate. However, the castle is not open to the public, but there are several other buildings on the estate that can be visited, such as the Orangery, the historic farms and the water mill. |
