The Northern Maritime Museum is a museum located in the city of Groningen, the Netherlands. The museum is dedicated to the history of shipping in the north of the Netherlands and shows how this sector has developed over the centuries. The museum is housed in a beautiful historic building on Brugstraat, near the famous Martinitoren. The building itself is a sight in itself and dates back to the 16th century. In the past, the building was used as a warehouse for shipping and as a monastery. In the museum you will find various exhibitions that show how shipping has developed in the north of the Netherlands. For example, there is an exhibition about the history of Groningen shipping. Here you can see, among other things, how Groningen ships were built and how they were used for trade. There is also an exhibition about the history of shipbuilding in Friesland. Here you can see, for example, how the famous sk'tsjes were built and how they were used for inland navigation. Another interesting exhibition is the one about the archeology of shipping. Here you can see, for example, shipwrecks that have been found over the years in the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer. |
