Sparta Stadion 'Het Kasteel' Rotterdam - Football club

Voetbalstadion "Het Kasteel" is the stadium of the Dutch professional football club Sparta Rotterdam, and is located in the Rotterdam district of Spangen. 

The first version of the Castle was built in 1916, after a design by the architects J.H. de Roos and W.F. overeijnder. The first football stadium in the Netherlands was opened on Sunday 15 October 1916. 

The opening match at 'De Sparta Burcht' was played against Willem II. Over the years, the stands of "Stadion Spangen" were renovated and expanded several times. The most major renovation took place in 1998-'99: the stadium was then almost completely rebuilt according to a design by the architectural firm  Zwarts & Jansma. 

The field was turned a quarter turn, so that "Het Kasteel" is now part of the Castle Stand on the long side of the stadium, while it was previously located on the short side of the stadium . The name of the new stadium became Sparta-Stadion "Het Kasteel". It has a capacity of 10,599 places.
