De Kuip stadium has been the home of the Rotterdam football club Feyenoord since 1937. The stadium can accommodate 65,000 spectators, revolutionary for the Netherlands at the time. The Rotterdam architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt, the designers of the Van Nelle factory, then designed a stadium with two stands above each other, with the audience sitting close to the field. In addition to a steel supporting structure, the building mainly consists of concrete and glass. In retrospect, this businesslike, functional architecture fits in well with Feyenoord's no-words-but-deeds mentality. In 1994 the stadium was radically renovated. De Kuip has since acquired the status of a municipal monument.
