The Waterloopbos nature reserve is located in the Noordoostpolder of the province of Flevoland. The area is best known for the many scale models of waterworks that can be found there. It is a nature reserve where you can walk and enjoy nature.
The Waterloopbos was originally used as a test area for hydraulic engineering projects. In the 1950s, various scale models of waterworks such as harbours, locks and dams were built. These models were used to test the functioning of the waterworks before they were actually built.
These scale models are no longer in use and the area has been transformed into a beautiful nature reserve. The scale models can still be found in the forest and have now been overgrown by nature. This gives the area a special atmosphere and provides a unique walking experience.
The Waterloopbos is a varied area with woods, water and open fields. There are several walking routes that lead you past the scale models and other highlights of the area. One of the highlights is the Delta Flume, an impressive scale model of a storm surge barrier. This is one of the largest scale models in the area and gives a good idea of what it looks like when a storm surge barrier is in operation.
