The Botanical Gardens were founded in 1639, three years after the University of Utrecht. The gardens used to be somewhere else (Nieuwegracht). Now they are located around the 19th-century Fort Hoofddijk, which played a role in the Old Dutch Waterline.Largest rock garden in EuropeIn Fort Hoofddijk you will find, among other things, the largest Rock Garden of Europe and an Evolution Garden full of summer flowers. In the discovery garden, many different plants can be discovered in very different themes, such as medicinal, edible and dye plants. The garden around the Bijenhotel has been created to please small animals such as butterflies, bumblebees and bees, but also frogs and hedgehogs. Flat in addition, you will find the spectacular Bird Hut from which you can spy on all kinds of birds without being seen yourself.
