Hortus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in Western Europe. This green heart of the city has existed since 1590, when Carolus Clusius, physician and botanist, cultivated the first tulip collections in Europe. Crown jewels of Hortus LeidenAccording to the Leiden Botanical Garden, these are the 'crown jewels': the Giant water lily (Victoria amazonica), which flowers almost weekly in a good summer, the pitcher plant (Nepenthes), with adhesive edge so that insects never come out again, and the Jade flower with its beautiful azure blue color, which blooms in April-May. In nature, the Jade flowers are pollinated by bats: they hang upside down from the clusters and drink the nectar. Fun for children: with biologist Ed on an expedition through the tropical greenhouses. |
