De Doelen is a much-acclaimed concert hall in the Mauritskwartier in Rotterdam, where around 600 concerts take place every year. In addition to classical concerts by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, world music and jazz are also programmed.
The history of the De Doelen concert hall dates back to the seventeenth century. , when an orchestra of town musicians gave public concerts in 'De Doele' on the Haagscheveer. As a replacement, the 'Groote Doelezaal' was opened on Coolsingel in 1844. A new Doelenzaal was opened in 1934, but it was destroyed in May 1940 during the bombing of Rotterdam. Only 26 years later, in 1966, the current De Doelen was opened. The building is a municipal monument and is of great cultural-historical value as the 'final piece of the reconstruction', as it is seen in Rotterdam. |
