The Rotterdamse Schouwburg has been part of Theater Rotterdam since 2017 after a merger with RO Theater, Production House Rotterdam and Wunderbaum. The mission of Theater Rotterdam is to offer the public an unconventional and interdisciplinary programming. Social current events and artistic innovation play a leading role in this. The Schouwburg itself has been located on Schouwburgplein since 1988, but it is not the first theater to have stood in Rotterdam. In 1887 the doors of the Groote Schouwburg are opened, a theater with up to 1,250 seats. However, during the bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, the building was destroyed. There will be an intermediate building until the new Rotterdamse Schouwburg is opened. That will eventually be replaced by the current building, because it no longer meets modern requirements for a theatre. The Rotterdamse Schouwburg is one of the two main locations of Theater Rotterdam and has two halls with respectively 879 and 160 places. With the programming full of diversity and multiplicity, TR mainly wants to make the public think. By entering into a conversation with each other and with the public, TR strives for connection. In this context, Theater Rotterdam also makes its own productions. |
