Hortus shop and greenhouse caféYou can also visit the Hortus shop. Various souvenirs are sold such as: organic plants, seeds, honey, jam or even tea from our own garden.If you only come to drink something on the terrace or buy something in the shop, you will of course not pay entrance. At Hortus Alkmaar you can enjoy a cup of organic coffee or tea with a delicious point in the greenhouse or, weather permitting, on the terrace apple pie. There is also a possibility to pick your own herbs from our tea garden, which is located next to the terrace . You can choose from different varieties, including mint, sage, lemon balm, licorice plant and lavender. HistoryThe garden used to be no bigger than half an acre. The collection consisted of about 100 types of herbs, mostly from a herb garden in Germany. From the beginning, it was decided to grow in a natural way in an ecological environment. In 1987 the garden was expanded to one hectare. In 1989, the garden was doubled in size by expanding on the other side of the water. In 1998, another half a hectare of land was added. |
